Introduction
T.E.A.C.H. (Teacher Education And Compensation Helps) Early Childhood® Michigan

T.E.A.C.H. (Teacher Education And Compensation Helps) was started in North Carolina in 1991. T.E.A.C.H. was started in response to a workforce study in North Carolina at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that indicated the average salary of caregivers was $4.50 an hour and that most caregivers did not expect to be in the field for more than five years. The T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® Project is licensed by Child Care Services Association (CCSA) and is currently in 23 states. The Michigan 4C Association is the license holder for the T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® Michigan and program funding is provided by the Early Childhood Investment Corporation .

One of the most critical indicators of quality child care is the education level of child care professionals. Research also indicates that children need stability during their child care experience. Michigan has a child care center staff turnover rate of approximately 18% per year and in family care homes approximately 40%, partially because child care professionals receive such low wages and typically no health benefits.

T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® Michigan offers scholarships to help child care providers complete coursework in early childhood education and increase their compensation and commitment to the field.
