Types of Classes

The Basics of Child Care
Designed for child care providers from family or group homes or child care centers, or for relative care providers and certified aides.

  • A series of classes totaling 16 hours
  • Earn 1.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Michigan State University (for an additional fee)
  • Earn 1 credit from some Community Colleges (additional fee required)
  • Counts toward state Child Day Care Licensing training requirements
  • Topics include:
    • professionalism
    • child development
    • health, safety and nutrition
    • working with parents
    • child guidance
    • community resources

Advanced Topics in Child Care
Classes are designed for child care providers in homes or centers who have completed the Futures Basic class or an equivalent.

  • A variety of 10-hour series of classes that provide study in a specialized area
  • Earn 1 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) from Michigan State University (additional fee required)
  • Topics include:
    • language and literacy
    • creative expression
    • advocacy for children
    • school-age care
    • working with challenged families
    • teaching and leading children (TLC)
    • creative ways to plan for play
    • kindness in the classroom
    • observing and recording young children’s behavior
    • laying healthy foundations
    • anti-bias - appreciating diversity

Caring for Infants & Toddlers: Parts A, B, C
Designed for child care providers who work with infants and toddlers.

  • Each part is a 16-hour training series
  • Three parts:
    A - an overview
    B - social/emotional growth and group care
    C - learning, development and working with families
  • Earn 1.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Michigan State University for each part (additional fee required)
  • Caring for Infants & Toddlers Part A is a requirement for Parts B and C

Caring for Infants & Toddlers Part A & B are now available as a Correspondence Course!

Inclusive Child Care: Parts 1, 2 and 3
Designed for child care providers who have completed Basic Child Care training and who are interested in inclusive child care.

  • Each part is a 16-hour training series

Child Care Administrative Part 1 & 2
Designed to cover the administrative and business aspects of child care.

  • Each part is a 15-hour training series
  • Earn 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Michigan State University for each part (additional fee required)
  • Topics include:
    • working with staff
    • policies and handbooks
    • marketing
    • licensing and legal issues
    • facilities and financial management
    • advocacy and accreditation
    • community resources

Director's Series Part 1 & 2
Designed for Program Directors and Administrators.

  • Each part is an 8-hour training
  • Earn 0.8 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Michigan State University for each part (additional fee required)

Blood Borne Pathogens & Communicable Disease
Designed specifically for child care providers.

  • A 5-hour training
  • Earn 0.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Michigan State University (additional fee required)
  • Topics include:
    • identifying blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases
    • methods to control exposure and practice prevention
    • protect children and staff
    • safe handwashing proceedures
    • universal precautions 

Blood Borne Pathogens, Safe Sleep & Shaken Baby
Designed specifically for child care providers this is an expanded training on blood borne pathogens and communicable disease that includes information from Tomorrow's Child on Safe Sleep practices and preventing shaken baby syndrom.

  • An 8-hour training
  • Earn 0.8 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Michigan State University (additional fee required)
  • Topics include:
    • blood borne pathogens and communicable disease
    • universal precautions 
    • licensing and legal issues
    • current recommendations for safe sleep
    • prevention of shaken baby syndrom

Emergency Response Planning for Child Care Centers 
Designed specifically for child care centers who are interested in gaining more knowledge about how to prepare for potential disasters.

  • A 5-hour training
  • Earn 0.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Michigan State University (additional fee required)
  • Topics include:
    • why child care centers should prepare
    • what disasters may happen in your area
    • preparing an emergency plan
    • communicating with parents
    • creating an emergency kit
